An overview of Tokyo

Tokyo lies halfway along the long archipelago of Japan, facing the Pacific Ocean. Made up of a dense urban landscape, Tokyo may seem daunting, but it is actually very organized and civilized. There are parks and gardens all over the city, and away from the main crowds you will find that the people are friendly and feel a strong sense of community. Tokyo is clean and safe. It is easy to get to any spot you are interested in on the well-run train system.

The people of Tokyo

Many of the life-long residences of Japan have high expectations of themselves and others. They expect everyone to be polite with many complicated and strict social rules. Meetings with the Japanese call for punctuality. Still they are a people who are interested and accepting of anything new or exotic. Try and talk to the Japanese you meet. Usually you will be greeted with a friendly smile. Donít be afraid to ask for directions, even though not all Japanese know much English. Many residents will go out of their way to help you find where you are going. Traditions are still important, and many traditional Shinto of Buddhist festivals are celebrated.

Main centers of Tokyo

Tokyo can be broken up into dozens of centers. In the middle is Chiyoda Ward, the business hub. To the east is Asakusa, the former Edo town filled with culture and temples.
