Main attractions for visitors
Here are some main attractions you wonít want to miss on your trip to Tokyo.
Tokyo Tower
Soaring 333 meters, 13 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower, the Tokyo Tower is one of the landmarks of this amazing city. There are two observatories for panoramic views of Tokyo. On a clear day you can see to Mount Fuji and Mount Tsukuba and the entire Kanto Region surrounding Tokyo. Or go at night and enjoy the city lit up in neon lights. Inside the tower you can rest at the cafÈ or shop in the towerís stores.
One hundred and seventy-six floodlights are installed to light up the tower each night. The tower is bathed in orange light in the winter for a warm glow and white in the summer. The tower is also constructed of steel weighing about 4,000 tons. It is a modern marvel that is much lighter than the 7,000 ton Eiffel Tower.
Asukusa
This is a temple area that flourished in the Edo period (1603-1868). Old Japan attracts many visitors all year long, but it is especially crowded during the New yearís holidays and festivals like the Sanja festival in May. The most interesting place to see in the area the Kaminarimon-gate with its large red lantern. On Nakamise Street there is a pedestrian mall that sells traditional Japanese crafts, like washi (Japanese paper), and happi (a traditional jacket). Also for sale are traditional dolls, fans, masks and more. One of the most visited temples in the area is the Senso-ji Temple, but many of the other temples are worthy of viewing. Often you will see Shinto processions, because there are so many temples in the area. A small carnival complex with rides, booths and games is also located in the area. You can also take a Sumida River cruise, where you can see a whole different side of this part of the city.
