Some restaurants to try

When you are planning to eat, you can hardly go wrong at a restaurant that serves Japanese food. Sushi will be extra fresh and delicious, since the Japanese take the preparation seriously. Other types of house specialties are udon, a type of thick wheat noodle often added to miso soup or with tempura shrimp. Yakitori is a style of chicken and vegetables on a skewer and served with a sauce, like soy sauce, mirin, and sweet sake, often eaten at lunch. Tokyo is a cosmopolitan city, so you will be able to find any other Asian or Western style of food available. From Mexican to Thai to a plain American style, whatever you want, can be easily found.

Hanezawa Beer Garden

For Japanese barbecue and a scenic outdoor garden setting, you might want to try Hanezawa Beer Garden. The styles of food served are sukiyaki and shabu-shabu. Shabu-shabu is prepared at the table and consists of thin slices of beef prepared quickly in broths containing vegetables. Sukiyaki is similar, but the broth is made of soy sauce and sake. Some diners take what they want from the pot and then dip the food in raw egg, a step you can skip if you want. Located in the Shibuya-ku area, reservations are required and credit cards are not accepted.

Seryna

This restaurant is grouped into four dining rooms that each offer a different style of Japanese cooking. You can choose from shabu-shabu, sukiyaki, or teppanyaki. Teppanyaki is a Japanese steakhouse. The restaurant can be found in Minato-ku and reservations are required. Credit cards are accepted.

Tofuya

If you like tofu, or are interested in trying it, you will find many ways of eating it here. Also located in Minato-ku, no reservations are needed, but credit cards are not accepted.
