Shopping in Tokyo
As a large city, you can find anything you are interested in shopping for and buying in Tokyo. If what you are looking for is fashion you will find goods at an extremely high cost.
Ginza
This shopping district is one of the largest and most famous, with many department stores, shops, restaurants, night clubs and cafes. Unlike other shopping districts that are visited more by the young, this area is more for the mature and wealthy set. This area is so expensive it is known for its $100 cups of coffee. Enjoy strolling the area on Saturday and Sunday afternoons when Chuo Street is closed to traffic to make a large pedestrian zone. Another attraction to the area is a kabuki theater, Kabukiza, with matinee and evening shows most days. Shows are long, lasting three to five hours and English earphones can be rented for translation.
Shinjuku Eastmouth
A large shopping area can be found around Shinjuku Station. At night you will see the streets lit up in neon signs, and people crowd the area all day and night. Over two million pass through each day. If exiting from the station, take the South Exit for entry into an area that looks somewhat like Times Square and is a red light district. The two main shopping streets are Shinjuku Dori Avenue and Yasukuni Dori Avenue. Many side streets also have interesting shops to explore. When you see Studio Alta, with a giant TV screen, you know youíre in the middle of it all. Nearby youíll find Odakyu Department store. You can also find many discount camera, electrical goods and computer shops. Before or after shopping, you may enjoy dining in restaurants on some of the upper floors of the skyscrapers. You will also find the newly built opera district nearby as well as the Shinjuku Gyoen, a beautiful Japanese garden.
