Day excursions from Tokyo

Many interesting towns and attractions are located within an hour of Tokyo. You have many choices for day-trips.

Kamakura

This coastal town is less than an hour south of Tokyo. Previously the political center of Japan in 1192, when the shogun Minamoto Yoritomo based his military government here. Around the 14th century the government declined and the next government was established in Kyoto. Many tourists enjoy visiting Kamakura for the many temples, shrines and other historical monuments. The beaches are also crowded in the summer, with some hiking trails to follow.

The most important shrine in this area is Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. Founded in 1063 by the Shogun Minamoto Yoritomo. The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family. A museum that houses the valuables of the Minamoto family is nearby as well as a park with a pond. Yabusame (horseback archery) is performed between April and September. Over two million visitors come each year.

Hakone

Located in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Hakone is a popular destination for anyone looking to enjoy a relaxing day and slow down from Tokyo's fast urban pace. The Hakone Shrine is easy to find by the prominent red torrii gates, but is hidden in the dense forest. On the shore of Ashinoko and at the foot of Mount Komagatake, the shrine seems otherworldly. Or you can take a ride on the Hakone Tozan Railway, a small train that winds through the densely wooded valley and bridges. You can also visit the hot springs, enjoy Lake Ashinoko, and view Mt Fuji. There is also Old Tokaido, a small museum with some Edo historical exhibits, to visit.
